About Professional Development

Organisation and People Development has the following mission:

For staff – To provide a range of training and development services to help develop the necessary skills, knowledge and professional expertise required to successfully deliver School or Unit objectives and contribute to the University Plan.

For PG students – To provide a range of training and development services to help develop the necessary skills and knowledge to assist them to become successful teaching assistants and learn a wider set of personal and professional skills relevant to future employment.

Strategic Aims

  • Developing Leadership – Excellent leadership at every level will enable the University to respond effectively to new challenges and ensure that staff are actively engaged in organisational change.
  • Developing Response to Diversity – The cultural diversity of the University is a key part of its success as an institution. Processes, policies and courses will be developed which increase a sense of positive belonging.
  • Developing Capability – All staff will feel challenged by the unique demands of the next five years and access to a range of development opportunities will provide both foundation and future skills.
  • Developing Teaching – Developing an approach to teaching which provides exciting and memorable experiences for students, is learner-centred and technologically literate is a critical part of the student experience.
  • Developing the Organisation – Schools and Departments must re-think their approach to the delivery of services and have the space to reflect, re-structure and reorganise.
  • Developing Global Reach – An international University must ensure that global reach and understanding pervades the delivery of our services.
  • Developing Access – Professional development ensures that access to services is based on intelligent understanding of the needs of all customers.

Principles and Working Culture

The principles and working culture statement identifies the behaviour and values required by Organisation and People Develpment staff to achieve the strategic aims.

The OPD team will:

  • Work as a team, sharing ideas and resources

  • Use technology to increase efficiency and quality

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the University
  • Actively participate in the development, as well as the implementation, of policy
