Research at the Centre for Additive Manufacturing

Establishing a foundational platform of pioneering research activity on additive manufacturing (AM).

The significant research work on the next generation of AM technology continues to cultivate fruitful industrial and academic collaborative networks, setting the agenda for future multifunctional and multimaterial AM research in the UK and beyond.

Key research areas at the Centre for Additive Manufacturing include:

  • Development of design systems and software tools for both single material and multifunctional additive manufacturing
  • Generating robust digital models for additive manufacturing
  • Discovering organic materials for scalable processes
  • Development of new metallic alloys for structural and functional use
  • Reactive jetting of high-performance polymers
  • Multimaterial jetting of functionalised nano -particulate inks and dielectric materials
  • Drop-on-demand jetting of high-temperature metals
  • Micro- and nano-scale multimaterial AM and supporting analysis methods
  • Next generation biomaterials
  • Additive manufacturing of innovative solid dosage forms for pharmaceutical applications
  • Additive manufacturing of low-dimensional functional materials for advanced electronics
  • New operations management techniques for additive manufacturing implementation
  • Translating additive manufacturing innovation into effective clinical solutions
  • Production of complex glass structures via additive manufacturing
  • Development of polymer nanocomposites for powder bed fusion technologies

The CfAM is the host of several large grants from EPSRC, Innovate UK, Industry and other funders.
