A successful web site has to be a team effort. There are
so many skills needed and these are usually spread across
individuals.
You will need the following in your team:
- someone who can give a whole unit perspective and who
can be responsible for making sure that audiences are appropriately
identified and that user needs are met
- someone who can design the site's information architecture
to meet the users' purposes
- someone with a flair for web-based design to help with
page layout and design
- someone with the technical aptitude to build the site
and incorporate the required functionality
This probably means that you need a small web team. The key
is to include senior staff to ensure that the web site is
tied in with, and contributes to other unit activities and
is not left as an optional extra. If you don't have all the
skills available in your unit, you can usually call on the
web team and/or
other central units (e.g. Marketing or S&EDU)
for help with Corporate Identity guidelines or specific skills training opportunities.
For the University context, the Web Steering Group has drafted
a web
roles document (pdf format
518kB) to cover these requirements in more detail. The web
team are carrying out a review of Schools' web sites and the
School's requirements for central support. As a result of
this, some Schools are working closely with the web team to
re-evaluate their School web presence and plan for implementation
within the new Corporate ID guidelines. Contact the web team to get involved.

that focuses on the roles required to run an
organisation-wide intranet. Much of what is here
can be adapted to suit smaller units running a
web site.
