Public Health

We have two NHSE-funded public health clinical lecturer posts (pre or post-doctoral, each up to four years). We are also part of the NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship scheme.

Research opportunities

Public health clinical lecturers have the opportunity to be involved in a range of research areas, including:

  • Global mental health
  • Injury epidemiology and prevention
  • Primary care and gastrointestinal epidemiology
  • Alcohol and tobacco research
  • Biobehavioural approaches to health and chronic disease screening

We have a 100% success rate of pre-doctoral clinical lecturers securing doctoral funding. Our previous postdoctoral clinical lecturer went on to be awarded a prestigious MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship.

Academic Clinical Lecturers

Michael Taylor

"I am a Clinical Assistant Professor in Public Health at the University of Nottingham and a Specialty Registrar in Public Health Medicine based in the East Midlands. My research interests include injury prevention, health behaviour change and the use of innovative methods, such as virtual technologies, to support communication in healthcare and public health contexts.

"The overall goal of a lot of my work is to prevent older people from experiencing injuries due to falling. A focus of my current research is the link between particular medicines - especially analgesics - and the risk of having a fall. The main aims are to learn how much taking these medicines increases the risk of falls for older people, and what we can do to reduce this risk. The research programme that my supervision team and I are proposing includes literature reviews and analysis of health datasets. We will also collect and analyse data using mixed methods and codesign approaches. We would like an output of our codesign work to be a tool that can be used by prescribers to effectively communicate risks, including that of falling, associated with taking certain medicines."
