Tree Planting at Riverside

Tree Planting

In 2022, a hedgerow was planted at the university’s Riverside Sports Complex to offset the emissions generated by BUCS Big Wednesday. Planting was done by the university’s sports teams in collaboration with the grounds team. Building upon this positive initiative, we are thrilled to announce the expansion of this habitat. If you share our passion for environmental stewardship and would like to contribute, we invite you to join us on 27 January from 10.30am. Food will be provided.

With additional funding from Severn Trent Water’s Biodiversity Boost initiative, our goal over the next two years is to plant a further 3,446 trees and whips to extend this native, species-rich hedgerow at the edge of some of Nottingham’s large industrial areas.

Hedges are the most widespread semi-natural habitat in the UK, they support a large diversity of flora and fauna. Planting hedgerows is as important as planting trees for tackling the climate and nature crisis. They are a valuable refuse and food source for wildlife and provide a green corridor of connected habitats.

Species to be planted as part of this project include: hawthorn, holly, field maple, crab apple, rowan and dog rose. Wildflower seed will also be sown to create further foraging for insects and animals.

Contact Sean Nolan to sign up, everyone welcome.

We will provide all the necessary tools, including gloves, spades, shovels etc. Please bring weather-appropriate clothing that you won’t mind getting dirty and sturdy footwear.

Together, let's make a positive impact on our community and ecosystem.
