France 24 spoke to Associate Professor in French History and Politics Paul Smith. France's National Assembly passed a law to recognise, and recompense Harkis – Muslim Algerians who fought on the side of France during the Algerian war of independence. The bill enables the Harkis and their descendants to receive compensation for the way they were treated at the end of the war in 1962.
