Best paper award for Nottingham/Ningbo student at Evostar 2010

Mr Jianhua Shao (Jian) received a Best Paper Award from EvoStar2010. EvoStar2010 conference is the top European event on Evolutionary Computation which was hosted between 7th and 9th April 2010 in Istanbul, Turkey. Jian was supported by the School of Computer Science to travel to Turkey to give a presentation on his nominated best paper “Jive: A Generative, Interactive, Virtual, and Evolutionary Music System”. After the presentation, the Best Paper Award was conducted by free ballot for all. Jive paper has been written for Jian’s summer research intern project in Natural Computing Research & Application (NCRA) group in University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland. During this project, he was working with the experts in Grammatical Evolution (EC) computing area and one of his supervisors is Michael O’Neill who is the founder of EC. This project has found an innovative way for generative music with interactive virtual sensing by EC. Jian, as the main researcher of the project, is currently a final year undergraduate Computer Science student and is planning to start his PhD research directly after graduation.
