Today is International Transgender Day of Visibility. This day at the end of March is here to both celebrate those who are able to live their lives openly and freely, and to raise awareness of the discrimination that people still face. Did you know that the word “transgender” is actually an umbrella term? It’s a term for those who identify their gender as different from the sex they were assigned at birth. So what’s the difference between sex and gender? A person's “sex” refers to a label that is assigned to them at birth based on the reproductive organs they are born with. When a person refers to “gender” this refers to a person's own understanding of themselves and how they want to identify.
