Reclaiming Narratives: Celebrating Black History Month in CS

bhm correct

On Weds October 16th, we held an afternoon event to celebrate Black History Month. The atrium was decorated with portrait posters of historical and contemporary black heroes and sheroes. Pepita Barnard opened the event with a generational story reclaiming her personal narrative. We enjoyed hearing from Seun Runsewe, a cloud expert working on tech infrastructure for, among other things, women’s health devices like breastfeeding pumps. We also appreciated Derrick Osaze, our Black Students Sport Officer from the Black Sport Collective (BSC), who shared information about what the BSC offers. Our Q&A Panel included them along with CS staff and students of black heritage, to answer questions, instill confidence, and provide guidance for black students in relation to education and their future aspirations.

We had a History Quiz with three winners each receiving Amazon vouchers as prizes! We enjoyed food, drink, and lively conversation. The event ran from 3pm to 5pm, but several people stayed to network afterwards!
