British Heart Foundation's Nottingham collections raise over £180,000 in 2018

This year has seen a record number of donations from the University of Nottingham to British Heart Foundation as part of the University’s Pack for Good campaign.

Over 3900 individual bags of donations were collected from University of Nottingham sites this year, with a total of 9639 bags of donations collected across the whole of Nottingham city.

In total these donations are worth over £180,000 to British Heart Foundation (BHF), which help to fund research into all heart and circulatory diseases and their risk factors. BHF also provide funding for research projects taking place at the University, including recent research which established a link between the gut biome and artery hardening, led by the School of Medicine.BHF bank derby road

As well as raising funds for BHF, providing easy to access donation points enables resources to be reused rather than thrown away. City wide, the equivalent weight of 17 elephants was diverted from waste through being donated to BHF, and over 1000 tonnes of indirect carbon emissions were avoided. Many of the donations collected are resold at local BHF charity shops including branches in Beeston and Broadmarsh city centre.

This year on campus halls provided donation points to moving out students in each hall reception area. Over 800 bags were donated from University of Nottingham managed halls alone, with Newark and Southwell halls on Jubilee campus and Willoughby hall on University Park campus each donating over 100 bags in the summer period.

Donation points were again available to students living off-campus in Lenton and Dunkirk, supported by student ambassadors handing out donation bags throughout the neighbourhoods to raise awareness of the donation points – led by the Off-Campus affairs team.

The distinctive BHF donations banks are still available to late January for students having a clear out before Christmas – see our moving out information page for a list of locations.
