Sustainable transport
With a UK staff and student community of over 40,000, and campuses in Malaysia and China, the university generates a significant demand for travel. Acknowledging this, the university actively encourages staff and students to choose low-carbon, healthy transport options both on and off campus.
Over the years, we have invested in and continue to invest in active travel and pedestrian prioritisation across all of our campuses, whether that be the creation of cycle paths and walking routes, the pedestrianisation of areas of our campuses, or the creation of active trails. Some specific examples include:
- The pedestrianisation of Coates Road to improve access for non-vehicular traffic to a busy area of campus
- A waterside pedestrian walkway at Jubilee Campus
- Removal of parking spaces and pedestrianisation of East Drive road, a major pedestrian corridor and key student area
- The creation of cycle routes across our campuses
- Improved and new pedestrian crossing points and paths
- Traffic calming, shared spaces and speed restrictions across all locations
- Closure of through routes at our Sutton Bonington Campus and the creation of a pedestrianised central plaza
- On-going investment in cycle infrastructure across our campuses
- Creation of active trail routes and walking routes around our campuses
- Investment in off-site infrastructure to support pedestrian prioritisation (improved lighting on the footway that connects Kegworth to Sutton Bonington campus).
More broadly, over the last few years the university has worked to improve transport options, resulting in:

The university has a travel plan in place, which is beneficial as part of the planning and development process and provides direction for supporting sustainable travel and reducing reliance on single-occupancy car trips. In order to review and update the travel plan, the university conducts travel surveys to find out more about the travel patterns and choices of our staff and students.
