Mandarin Corner: Traditional Chinese Musical Instruments

Description
On the evening of Thursday December 4 we were delighted to be joined by professional musician Mandy Zhang for our final online Mandarin Corner event of the Autumn term. Mandy has 25 years' experience of playing the pipa ('Chinese lute') and is recognised by the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing as a qualified pipa teacher.

NCI holds 12th "China and Me" Mandarin Speech Contest on ZOOM

Description
On 20th November six shortlisted candidates (one staff member and five students, each from different schools across the University) had their "China and Me" Speech Contest videos broadcast live for assessment by a panel of judges at our ZOOM event. Established in 2009 by Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI), the "China and Me" Speech Contest is an annual event that offers Mandarin learners an opportunity to test and showcase their language proficiency. Winners of the contest are be selected and trained to attend the following year's Chinese Bridge Competition, representing the University of Nottingham.

Mandarin Corner: Online Spoken Chinese Class

Description
On November 5, NCI teachers and students gathered once again for our "Online Spoken Chinese Class", our third Mandarin Corner event of the semester. Delivered in the evening via Zoom, the event offered students of intermediate level an insight into authentic colloquial expressions used by Chinese people on a day-to-day basis

Mandarin Corner: Workshop on Useful Tools for Learning Chinese Online

Description
The evening of Thursday 22nd October saw over 20 Mandarin teachers and students gather to attend NCI's second Mandarin Corner of the academic year. The workshop entitled "Useful tools for learning Mandarin online" was delivered by David Bean, one of NCI's evening class students, who has also been teaching himself Mandarin through various online resources.

Fun and learning at NCI's first online Mandarin Corner event

Description
Mandarin learning for the academic year got into full swing with 27 UoN staff and students attending NCI's first online Mandarin Corner event on the evening of Thursday 8 October. The event was organised for UoN Mandarin learners who recently signed up for NCI's Language Partner Programme. Established in 2009, the Language Partner Programme is a platform where English-speaking and Mandarin-speaking students and staff can pair-up to improve their target language whilst socialising and exchanging ideas on current issues. It has been very popular among both Mandarin learners and international students from China.

Hundreds Attend Temple Fair 2020 Supported by NCI

Description
18 January saw hundreds of local residents join the fun at the 5th Temple Fair in Nottingham's Old Market Square. This event was organised by Nottingham City Council along with the Chinese Students and Scholars Associations (CSSA) of both the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, supported by Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI), Asia Business Centre, Hangzhou Culture Exhibitions Ltd and Tianjin Modern TCM Innovation Centre.

Over 150 local residents joined the free drop-in arts and crafts session delivered by UoN student volunteers led by NCI Manager Hua Geddes at Lakeside Arts on Sunday 26th January.

NCI supports film screenings at Lakeside

Description
NCI was proud to support the film screenings of the award-winning Chinese documentary 'The Next Life' and its sequel 'A Second Child' at the Djanogly Theatre, Lakeside Arts on 12th November.
