Mental Health
Mental health research spans the range of mental health disciplines, including psychiatry and applied psychology. We aim at excellence in key areas of applied mental health, especially clinical trials, digital mental health, neuroimaging and neuromodulation, mood disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, psychosocial interventions, and psychometric assessments.
Since mental health is important across the lifespan and all walks of life, our interdisciplinary approach to research is founded upon wide collaborations, both within the University and with other partners.
The hub of mental health research is the Institute of Mental Health, a well-established partnership between the University of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, acknowledged as one of the leading mental health research centres in the UK.
Current major infrastructure and programme grants include the Mental Health and Technology theme within the Nottingham NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, the NIHR MindTech Medtech Co-operative, the UKRI Digital Youth Programme and the Mental Health and Well-Being theme within the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration East Midlands. We supervise numerous PhD students and encourage enquiries from prospective students. Mental Health also hosts professional doctorates in clinical psychology and forensic psychology.
We aim to develop national and international impacts in mental health research within key areas of our research strategy. We will focus on our areas of strength with additional focus on strengthening other areas with major future research potential. We are also committed to developing teaching excellence by forging stronger links between research excellence and teaching.
