  • Dr Victoria James

Victoria's research is focused on understanding the complex mechanisms that lead to cancer progression and spread (metastasis). Her group investigates how extracellular (cell-to-cell) communication via RNA, DNA and proteins promotes cancer progression, with the aim of identifying novel markers to better stage and predict disease behaviour for the development of novel therapeutic strategies. Victoria has a specific interest in both primary and metastatic cancers of bone (such as prostate cancer) as well as cutaneous (skin) and other soft tissue tumours.

My research expertise is within the realm of nanoparticulate drug delivery which essentially means using nanotechnology to formulate drug carriers for the purpose of enhancing their availability where needed in the body. I am particularly interested in utilising natural materials in the construction of nanoparticulate carriers because of their 'acceptability' to biological systems. In this regard we have used chitosan, bees wax, cocoa butter, coconut oil etc to successfully construct nanoparticulate carriers for several therapeutic agents. I also have expertise in formulating therapeutic agents from plant sources in nano-particulates for treating diseases like cancer and we are currently studying how the active constituent from turmeric (curcumin) can be packaged into a nanoparticle system in the treatment of colon cancer.

He has two projects; one examining the role of macrolide antibiotics on the airway epithelium, using epithelial cells cultured from well phenotyped asthma patients and a second looking at distal airway inflammation using a small bronchial brush technique.Continuing research from his thesis, he is evaluating the role of exhaled nitric oxide in treatment decisions in asthma care and have a funded study in this area. Finally, he is investigating the role of the small airways in asthma using hyperpolarized xenon MRI imaging in animal models.
