Environmental training at UoN

ClimateFreskKO2024

We've had a busy year rolling out various training opportunities on environmental issues to both staff and students at UoN. There are two routes to getting involved, Carbon Literacy Training and Climate Fresk. Both aim to empower and educate our community on environmental issues and inspire action at a local and gloabl level.

Carbon Literacy Training

In May, over 20 staff members from across the university took part in a widely enjoyed and successful Carbon Literacy Training (CLT) session delivered by Nottingham Trent University. CLT is one day training on the science around climate change and how increased carbon is disrupting the balance of our climate. It also teaches the ways human actions are contributing and how we can work to reduce this.

A range of job roles were represented in the training, from academic staff to lab technicians, libraries, widening participation, marketing, EDI and beyond. It was fulfilling to share ideas from across our community and learn about the pressing issues we face. It was a great opportunity for knowledge exchange and each attendee developed a plan for actionable changes to reduce the carbon footprint in their area of the university.

Most attendees have been certified as Carbon Literate. We are now developing a working group of internal facilitators who will be able to offer this invaluable training across the university. Our goal is to ensure all our staff, and potentially in the future, students, have the opportunity to complete Carbon Literacy Training.

Ultimately, we want our community to feel knowledgeable and empowered to make a real positive difference to the environment and our future. More information on staff training to come soon.

Climate Fresk

Following a successful kick off event in March, UoN facilitators have delivered another Climate Fresk Workshop, this time in the Faculty of Engineering. The session for Foundation students aimed to increase awareness of climate change and provide an opportunity to reflect on the critical role engineers play in addressing the climate crisis.

By the end of the session, many students expressed a desire to take action, whether through personal lifestyle changes or by pursuing careers that contribute to sustainability. The Climate Fresk not only educated but also inspired, igniting a passion for making a positive impact on the world.

More workshops are planned across the faculty.
