Praise for Hall Porters' Achievements

Our Hall porters play an important role as part of the Hall teams, with a key part of their role being to ensure the Halls look presentable and along with Housekeeping staff they dispose of all types of waste from various areas of the hall. Our students too work alongside Hall staff and are encouraged to recycle and reuse in Halls and take part in the Halls go greener competition making an active contribution to a sustainable future.

During March twelve of our Hall porters attended a course and successfully achieved City & Guilds level 1 in Waste and Recycling. The main objective of the course was to learn procedures for accepting, collecting, removing and disposing of waste and recyclable materials. Alongside these were sustainability and recycling key points such as: identifying types of waste that can be recycled; the importance of segregating recyclable materials at acceptance/collection point; removing different types of waste and identifying ways in which own working practices can damage the environment; and current legislation for waste and recycling.

This course can also lead onto Level 2 Apprenticeship in Facilities Management, which six of our Hall porters are currently working hard to achieve.

The staff who attained this fantastic achievement are:

  • David Smith - Sherwood Hall,
  • Sean Hall & Gordon Chambers Asman - Newark Hall,
  • John Frith & Shirley Brown - Nightingale Hall,
  • Jamie Stephen & David Humphries - Florence Boot Hall,
  • Robin Brewster & Andy Gordon - Rutland Hall,
  • Pete Walton & Steve Topham - Southwell Hall
  • Chris Rickells - Hugh Stewart Hall.
