In the biggest ceremony to date on 10 November, with 115 finalists, University of Nottingham have been shortlisted for two Green Gown Awards, as well as a nomination of a student in the Sustainability Champion Award.

Established in 2004, the Green Gown Awards recognise the exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by Universities and Colleges across the country. The Awards have become established as the most prestigious recognition of best practice in the further and higher education centre. Run by the Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges, the broad range of award categories include Carbon Reduction, Food and Drink, and Enterprise and Employability amongst others.

Situated close the University’s Sutton Bonington campus, the woodland was created in late 2012 on a 60 acre plot of arable land, with help from students, staff and the local community. Exercise stations were installed on the site in 2015, further enhancing its popularity with users.

The nomination for the Continuous Improvement category recognised the University’s work in A decade of driving sustainable transport- a number of creative projects mainstreaming sustainable, healthy travel options. Nottingham sees the lowest car ownership of the UK’s major cities and recent collaboration has resulted in further citywide projects.

Finally, Andy Stride was nominated in the Student Sustainability Champion Award category. Andy has helped to develop over 14 different social enterprises tackling renewable energy, access to clean water and sanitation, and promotion of a circular economy. As President of Enactus Nottingham, leading a group of 167 students, this year the team won the Enactus UK National Competition for their outstanding work.
