University of Nottingham reaches Green Gown Finals

The University of Nottingham has been shortlisted for two Green Gown awards, as well as one Leadership award and two nominations for Enactus Nottingham projects.

Established in 2004, the Green Gown Awards recognise the exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by Universities and colleges across the UK. With sustainability moving up the agenda, the awards are synonymous with the most prestigious recognition of best practice within the tertiary education sector.

The photo competition included categories for smartphone entries to maximise the accessibility of the competition, and a category exclusively for our international campuses at China and Malaysia. You can view our video on the #BeastsofUoN project on YouTube.

In the Carbon Reduction category, the University has been nominated for Medical School Carbon Reduction Strategies involving a series of infrastructure projects to reduce the energy demand of the Medical School, constructed in the 1970s as part of Nottingham Teaching Hospital Trust’s Queen's Medical Centre. As an energy intensive facility, it has requirements for high resilience on many primary building services, namely power, heating and cooling. It is the University’s single most energy intensive building due to its construction and use. Three years on, the building has seen reductions of greenhouse gas emissions and an annual saving of £560,000.

In a third category, Chris Jagger, Chief Estates and Facilities Officer at the University, has been shortlisted for the Leadership award which seeks to recognise exceptional leadership for sustainability in the sector. Chris has directed the largest number of BREEAM accredited HE schemes, including two achieving Outstanding, and one project recognised as LEED Platinum. Find out more about the nomination in our YouTube video.

Enactus Nottingham have been shortlisted for both the Enterprise and Food and Drink categories. The Enterprise category, new this year, seeks to recognise sustainable enterprise as a key ingredient of contemporary education. The nomination reflects a range of projects undertaken by Enactus, including Recovered, a social enterprise re-purposing furniture, and Bottle by Bottle, a project which makes use of plastic bottles as building materials in developing countries. The nomination in the Food and Drink category is for the burgeoning Foodprint project which seeks to provide solutions to food waste and food poverty in Nottingham.
