Reducing coffee cup waste at vending machines

As part of our WasteNott  commitment to reduce the amount of single-use plastics and disposables used across our campuses, it is now possible to use your own reusable cup in all vending machines across UK campuses.

Each time customers opt to use their own reusable cup or mug they will receive 20p off the purchase price of the drink. All machines also now include WasteNott messaging to remind users of the incentive to avoid disposable cups.

The new Lavazza branded machines have a cup shelf which detect when a customer’s own cup is presented, and automatically apply the 20p discount. The machines are compatible with the University of Nottingham KeepCups (12oz size) and will accommodate most standard sized mugs.

Last year, over 45,000 disposable cups were used from hot drinks machines across campuses. Our aim is to reduce hot drinks cup waste by 50%. Coffee cups are a difficult to recycle item – you can learn more about this on our WasteNott FAQs page.

As well as providing a way to purchase hot drinks outside of typical working hours, the new machines are more energy efficient and allow customers to use cashless payment including Apple Pay or Google Pay.
