Students living in university catered halls take part in an electricity saving competition each year as part of the go! Greener Halls Competition.
Well done and thank you to everyone who took part. Your efforts to save electricity and make sustainable choices have made a real difference!
And the winners are...
Congratulations to Rutland Hall for securing first place with an impressive 18% reduction in electricity usage throughout November!
Sherwood Hall were very close in second place with a 17% reduction, and Lincoln Hall came third with a 15% reduction. Nearly all of the halls that took part were successful in reducing their electricity consumption and carbon emissions compared to their historical average use. Each of these halls has shown exceptional commitment to sustainability, and their contributions have collectively helped reduce our university’s carbon footprint.
All halls saved 33,566 kWh of electricity and 6,948 kg of CO₂. This is enough to power an average UK home for 12 years, or is the equivalent of 6 return flights from Manchester to New York.
This is fantastic but we can’t stop there. Your actions have contributed to a greener, more sustainable campus, and we hope you’ll continue these into the future. From turning off lights, taking sorter showers and unplugging devices.
What happens next?
Switch off over Christmas
Before you leave for the winter break, make sure your new energy habits continue:
- Unplug chargers, turn off lights, and switch off electronics.
- Double-check that no lights are left on.
- Ensure all taps are turned off tightly to prevent leaks.
- Ensure all windows are tightly shut to prevent drafts.
- Inform the hall management of any ongoing issues, like leaky taps or faulty heating, before leaving.
